Are you looking to hire Android app developers or an Android development team to build and launch an innovative and successful mobile app?
To help ensure that you get the right Android developer, I have put together this article on how to hire Android developers who are most suitable for your project.
I will also cover the cost of hiring Android developers from various regions, including a state-by-state breakdown in the United States and the cost of developing an Android application by complexity. I will finish the article by giving a list of the best software development platforms where you can hire Android developers.
Let’s jump right in.
According to Statcounter, Android is the world’s most popular mobile operating system, with 71.5% of the market share in 2024. To put that figure into perspective, Apple’s iOS has the next biggest share, with 27.73% of the global mobile user market, with the remaining amount shared by companies like Windows and Linux.

This makes Android a highly lucrative marketplace for those able to build innovative Android apps attractive to users. For this, you will need great developers. Let’s start with the first question I usually ask – how much does it cost?
In this article:
Latest Android Trends
In 2024, software development companies are increasingly racing to utilize modular app development to build more powerful applications. Modular app development allows an application to be built in sections or modules, which can then be linked together to create the whole app.
The increasing complexity of apps has led to the requirement for a new development approach. First and foremost, as apps get increasingly complex, integrating technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and blockchain, development teams are getting larger and larger.
Modular app development allows companies to create parts of the overall software application in silos, something which helps protect source code, etc. Other advantages include faster development times, better scalability, and better team oversight (in some cases, as teams are smaller and working on specific solutions).
How Much Does It Cost to Hire Android Developers?
Technology today has made it possible to hire developers from all corners of the world. Remote work accounts for a large percentage of the software development industry. According to Statista, 67.75% of technology workers in 2023 worked remotely, either part-time or full-time.
This means that millions of developers are now working online, something which has vastly increased the pool of talent available to companies. Some companies still hire developers in-house and on a full-time basis, but most are now choosing to hire remote workers, either on an outsourced or full-time basis.
Before I get into how to find that great Android developer, I will start by giving you a better idea of the respective costs to hire an Android engineer in different geographical regions on a remote and in-house basis.
It is worth noting that there are a number of factors that drive the cost of hiring Android developers. These are:
- Geographical region. Hiring a developer from California, USA will obviously be more expensive than hiring from Eastern Europe or India, for example. This is primarily due to the cost of living but also other factors such as the available talent pool, etc. India produces millions of new developers every year. For example, this means the cost of developers is kept lower.
- Better costs more. Hiring developers from reputable software development companies who outsource their full-time, vetted Android developers will obviously cost more than hiring a cut-price freelancer Android developer.
- In-house developers will cost more if you are hiring from a high-cost area such as Silicon Valley vs. hiring a full-time remote developer from India. However, hiring in-house developers makes it very difficult to scale up and down your development team as and when you need it.
- Freelance Android developers can be cheap; however, I will talk more about the risks of hiring freelance developers later on.
Ok, so let’s start by looking at the cost range of hiring outsourced remote developers by different regions on an hourly and monthly basis. I will focus the rates range on mid-level and senior developers as no one hires junior developers unless they are part of a software development team and can be mentored by a more senior developer.
The lower cost presented below is the cost of hiring a mid-level Android developer on a full-time basis, while the higher cost will be hiring a senior Android developer on an hourly basis.
United States
$55-$300 per hour to hire a mid-level-to-senior Android remote developer. $10,400-$48,000 a month.
Western Europe
$45-$200 per hour, depending on the hiring options outlined above. $8,000-32,000 per month for full-time developers.
Eastern Europe
$35-$150 per hour or $5,600-$24,000 per month.
India
$10-$65 per hour. $1,600-$10,400 per month.
Cost of United States’ Android Developers by Region:
Here is a list of the cost of hiring Android developers by state in the USA. You will notice that the costs are lower than above because these are the costs of hiring Android developers on an in-house, full-time basis. You save money as you employ them directly and on a long-term basis.
- Hire Android developers in California (San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco): $124,800 to $284,000 per year
- Hire Android developers in Colorado (Denver, Colorado Springs, Greenwood Village): $111,000 – $124,000 per year
- Hiring Android developers in Illinois (Chicago, Buffalo Grove, Deerfield): $106,228 – $123,440 per year
- Hiring Android developers in Maryland (Fort Washington, Baltimore, Annapolis): $90,001 – $115,000 per year
- Android developers to hire in Massachusetts (Boston, Worcester, Springfield): $112,500 – $113,875 per year
- Android developers to hire in New York (Albany, New York, Brooklyn): $112,500 – $166,400 per year
- Android developers to hire in Texas (Austin, Houston, Dallas): $93,917 – $121,811 per year
Top Tip: Try to hire Android developers from a company or platform that is located in your country. This will help you when it comes to any contractual disputes or issues, etc. There is much less likely to be any cultural issues, such as work ethics, holidays, etc., that get in the way when hiring from them.

How Much Does It Cost to Develop an Android Web Application in 2024?
It goes without saying that the cost of developing an Android application will depend on the complexity of your project.
For example, are you trying to develop a simple Android app with just one or two core features? Are you trying to develop a Minimum Viable Product MVP android prototype to test your app idea before you build the whole product? Or are you an enterprise-level company that is building a complex Android app that features cutting-edge technologies like blockchain or artificial intelligence (AI)?
1. A simple Android development project
Companies that are looking to expand their user reach from their web apps often make the leap into the Android market by creating a simple Android application. Typically, they will create a simple minimum viable product or MVP that has only basic versions of the core features. They can then launch the app and undertake further development based on customer feedback.
A good example of this kind of project is a simple Android app development project that has limited features and will likely require between 1 to 3 Android developers. It will cost anywhere between $5,000 and $50,000 and take 1 to 8 weeks to develop.
2. A medium-complexity Android development project
Most companies end up developing a medium-complexity Android application. An example is a mobile shipping app. Typically, a medium-complexity application will include several custom-developed features alongside multiple off-the-shelf solutions such as payment gateways, search features, etc.
A medium-complexity Android application will require between 2 to 6 Android developers and take between 1.5 and 6 months to complete. You can expect to pay between $50,000 to $250,000.
3. A complex Android development project
A complex Android application will require multiple customized features and integrate into an existing enterprise system. A good example is a fintech app such as a banking application, fitness app, etc. Such apps need to have a high level of security, performance, and scalability.
An Android software project of this complexity will require 6+ Android developers and several designers. You can expect this kind of project to take more than 6 months and cost upwards of $250,000.
Defining the Features of Your Android App
I have talked about simple, medium, and complex PHP web development projects, but what exactly separates them? The simple answer is “the set of features”, or, even more simply, the “requirements”.
Your Android mobile app can include literally any feature. Everything from a member account, payment gateways, and social media integration to in-app video calling and file sharing.
If you are not sure of what exact features your app will have, here is a minimum viable product MVP template that you can use as a guide. You will need this list of features to define the exact skills and number of developers you require. It will also help you plan your budget too.
Keep in mind an increasing number of companies with limited funding are raising enough money to undertake the design phase of their applications and then using this to raise the funds that they need to build an MVP or the whole application. This is a good option.

What Kind of Android Developers Do You Need?
Android engineers come in all shapes and sizes. This is because there are a large number of programming languages and development frameworks that can be used to build Android apps. To give you an idea of the main skills used in Android development, I have put together a list of the top Android programming languages, Android development frameworks, and other important Android tools to help you.
I will focus on native app development technologies to start, however, due to more and more companies undertaking hybrid or cross-platform development (creating an app for multiple operating systems using a single codebase), I will also mention these technologies for your reference too.
Java Android Developers
Java is an object-oriented programming language, which refers to a programming model or approach that is organized around data or objects and not functions and logic. Java is a hugely versatile language as Java applications are able to run on the Java virtual machine or JVM, meaning that they can run on virtually any software architecture.
Since the Java syntax is very similar to C and C++, it is very easy for Android engineers to learn Java and jump between these programming languages. It is because of its enormous benefits, including its ease of use and its enormous libraries, that around 65% of Android developers globally use Java.
This statistic obviously means that it is not hard to find Android developers, especially if you are planning to hire remote Android professionals. However, finding the right developer is much more of a challenge.
To make sure that you hire an Android developer who is most suited to your project, you will need to know where to hire them as well as how to ensure you find them amongst the many Android developer candidates who apply for the role. I will cover this in-depth later on in this article.
Kotlin Android Developers
The Kotlin Programming Language was designed to be fully interoperable with Java (Kotlin recognizes Nullable and NotNull annotations in Java and treats them accordingly. This means that Kotlin offers seamless integration with Java, helping everything from upgrading existing Android apps to building new ones with multiple programming languages.
The main advantage Kotlin has over Java and other programming languages is its simple syntax. It uses a lighter, simpler codebase that employs type inference to ensure that syntax is more concise. The result is fewer errors and better-quality code.
According to Android developers, Kotlin is “used by over 60% of professional Android developers”. This means that there are millions of Kotlin developers out there. You need to hire a Kotlin developer based on your specific project requirements.
Python
It is hard to believe that Python is now over 30 years old. This high-level, general-purpose programming language can be used to create dynamic and performant mobile apps for the Android operating system as well as iOS and Windows.
While being used for all kinds of projects, Python has really carved out a niche in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This is because of its simple syntax (far more so than Java, for example), which requires less code to be written to achieve the same results, and the vast number of libraries that have now been developed that support AI development.
Here is a quick example of the same problem being solved in first Java and then Python:
Java:
public class EvenOddCheck {
// Function to check if a number is even or odd
public static String checkEvenOdd(int number) {
if (number % 2 == 0) {
return “Even”;
} else {
return “Odd”;
}
}
public static void main(String[] args) {
// Example usage
int num = 7;
String result = checkEvenOdd(num);
System.out.println(num + ” is ” + result);
}
}
Python:
def check_even_odd(number):
if number % 2 == 0:
return “Even”
else:
return “Odd”
# Example usage
num = 7
result = check_even_odd(num)
print(f”{num} is {result}”)
If you are planning to implement any AI or ML features into your mobile Android app, then you will almost certainly be looking at using Python. Keep in mind that developers undertaking AI or ML development will need to be talented and have a good degree of experience developing the type of solutions that are in line with your specific project.
So, for example, if you are developing a neutral language network to allow libraries to classify ebooks according to genre, content suitability, etc., then you need to hire a Python expert with similar experience.
Android Development Frameworks and Tools
Android Studio
Android Studio is Google’s integrated development environment or IDE that was created specifically for the Android operating system. It is used by most Android developers on account of its many powerful tools that help speed up Android development. It also allows Android mobile app developers to ensure that the apps that they are building are reliable and offer high performance.
Examples of some of the great tools that are available on Android Studio include:
Android SDK Build Tools – A tool that converts developer code into machine code that can then help them with compiling, building, and testing their Android applications.
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) – A command line tool that allows developers to undertake a range of actions, including debugging and installing applications.
Android Virtual Device (AVD) Manager – This tool helps developers create Android Virtual Devices, which are emulators that allow developers to run and test their code.
Android SDK or Software Development Kit
Android SDK is a collection of tools and libraries that Android developers can use to create applications for the Android operating system. SDK provides the necessary environment, documentation, and tools to develop, test, and debug Android apps. It is another essential tool for Android development that all Android developers should know.
Cross-Platform Android Development Frameworks
React Native
React Naive was created by Meta (then Facebook) and released back in 2015. It is an open-source UI software framework that can be used to develop applications for all the major operating systems, including Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, etc. The real advantage of using a cross-platform framework like React Naive is that you can create an application with just one codebase that can run on multiple platforms.
The obvious advantage is not having to have lots of Android and iOS developers but rather cross-platform developers. This helps companies to cut costs as well as, in some cases, reduce software development times. React Native is now a relatively mature framework, meaning that a lot of the early problems have been fixed.
Today, it allows for near-native app performance as well as a high level of reliability and security. Another important advantage is that React Native uses JavaScript. JavaScript, sometimes called JS, is the most popular programming language in the world today. A recent survey by Stack Overflow found that 62.3% of respondents said that they used JavaScript.
When you hire React Native developers, you need to remember that you must fully check them out to make sure that they know their stuff and have lots of experience developing Android and iOS apps. If your developer writes bad code, then your issue or bug is likely going to be multiplied across all platforms, i.e., poor code that leads to performance issues is going to be slow in both Android and iOS.
Flutter
Flutter is Google’s answer to cross-platform development. Released back in 2017, Flutter can be used to develop hybrid apps on Android, iOS, Fuchsia, web, Linux, macOS, and Windows. It ticks the same boxes as React Native above, namely that it allows Flutter developers to create an app that works on multiple devices using a single codebase.
Flutter allows developers to build highly performant Android applications that are secure and reliable. Again, you will need to hire Flutter developers with the right skills and experience for your project if you want it to succeed.
Backend service providers
You will need a bulletproof backend provider if you want to ensure you have a reliable and performant Android app. For those of you who don’t know, a backend provider handles everything from data storage to process processing.
When a user takes action on a particular process on their phone or Android device, the backend service provider’s server will undertake the request and send the information back to the app. So, for example, if you request to see a bank statement, your app will send a request to your service provider’s server, which will then retrieve the information, process it so that it can be viewed by the user, and then send it to the authorized device so that the user can view it.
No matter how well you build your app, if you have a poor backend service provider, your performance, scalability, and security will suffer.
Here are the best service providers. Whichever you choose, you must make sure that your backend Android developer has experience building and setting up the apps’ backend using it. This includes using any relevant development tools that are provided by the service provider’s platform.
1. AWS – Backend Service Provider
AWS is the go-to service provider for Android app development. It provides an enormous infrastructure that gives even the most process-hungry Android systems the power they need to operate. AWS comes with an extensive range of powerful tools that allow Android developers to improve the features that they are building. Examples include off-the-shelf Android solutions that can be quickly integrated into Android apps.
2. Microsoft Azure – Backend Service Provider
Microsoft Azure is another great backend service provider. It offers all the performance, security, and scalability that you will need. It has a huge number of development tools that help with everything from SQL databases to AI/ML and more. Examples of great Azure tools include Azure App Service, Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure SQL, Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure OpenAI. Indeed, Microsoft Azure is considered one of the premier places for Android development thanks to a large Android mobile app development community and its powerful tools and libraries.
3. Google Cloud Platform GCP – – Backend Service Provider
Google Cloud Platform is another great choice for mobile backend service providers. GCP also has some great development tools including Google Compute Engine, Google Cloud Databases, and Google Cloud Source Repositories, all of which help to speed up the development process and to help your developers build faster and more user-friendly Android apps.
Additional Android Developer Skills:
There are a few more skills that you will need from your Android developer before I go any further.
This is a general list. Some might not be relevant to your project, but they will most likely be.
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) – Your Android software developers should have all the skills and experience to work with any API that your project might require. In some cases, you might need to create your own API, so make sure they have the right skills before you hire them. Examples of common usages for APIs include integrating location-based services, payment gateways, social media platforms, etc.
Database Management – Experience with RESTful APIs, which are used to connect Android applications to back-end services, and knowledge of SQLite for local storage, etc.
Version Control using Git – It is essential that your Android developer knows how to use a version control system like Git to manage changes in the codebase. This will allow you to test new versions of the app without risk should you decide to revert back to previous versions.
Security – All Android apps handle sensitive user data that must be protected by local law. Data breaches are a very serious matter and can destroy a brand. It is likely that your app will, at least, include a user function that requires a secure login, and will probably utilize a payment gateway, etc., that will need to be secure. Make sure your Android developer has a good background of good coding practices and encryption, etc.
Performance Optimization – Performance is everything when it comes to mobile applications. Poor performance will definitely send your users elsewhere. Building a highly performant app starts with clean code. Your developer must write good code and know how to best optimize your application for the Android ecosystem.
Communication and Teamwork – This one is a no-brainer but worth including. A great developer still needs to have good communication skills. This includes the ability to raise or flag issues and express opinions, even if they don’t match those of management when they are important. Such an individual can save a project from huge overruns, bugs, etc.

5 Steps to Hire Android Developers
Now that you understand what kind of developers you need for your specific project, the time has come to find them. But where is the best place to hire Android professionals, and how do you know they really are what they say they are? Here is my 4-step guide on how to hire Android developers.
Step 1: Defining your requirements
Without a well-defined list of project specifications, you are effectively going into your project development blind. Take all the time you need to think through your entire Android app project so that you can create a complete list of features and goals. This will allow you to create an accurate project specification document.
Unless you plan to build your app in one go and do very little maintenance, you are most likely thinking of building your Android app in stages via a minimum viable product or MVP. In this case, you can split the requirement document into the MVP stage and the post-MVP stage.
If you need a better idea of what specific points you will need to add to your project specification guide, then I have put together a Minimum Viable Product MVP template guide to help you. You can use this guide as a template and add your specific project goals, features, and other requirements. Once you have filled it out, you will have enough information to reach out to software development companies or to post jobs on freelancer platforms.
Step 2: Find the best hiring platform
From my experience, it definitely seems that companies don’t pay enough attention to their choice of hiring platform. Indeed, I would say that they tend to fixate on the developer and don’t concern themselves enough with looking into the company that they are hiring them from. Let’s start by looking at the various hiring platforms that you can hire Android engineers from.
If you are not planning to hire someone in-house then you have two hiring options when it comes to remote developers.
1. A Software Development Company that outsources its full-time developers
2. Freelance platforms that connect independent developers to clients like you.
Let me jump right in by saying that hiring senior app developers from a software development company that has a good reputation within the industry (see their feedback on Clutch and Glassdoor) is by far the safest approach if you want to ensure your project is a success.
To highlight why, I am just going to show you a list of the main advantages of hiring from a reputable software development company vs. the disadvantages of hiring from a freelancer site.
Advantages of hiring from a software development company:
- Fully vetted developers who, in the case of some companies, work for the platform on a full-time basis.
- A large community of developers who have experience building apps similar to yours.
- Support from a complimentary account manager.
- Cohesive development teams.
- Access to the platform’s powerful project management tools and tailored app development process.
- Complimentary quality assurance (QA) for all features and pre-release products (only the best software development companies offer this for free).
- Water-tight NDAs.
- Risk-free trial on all new developers, meaning you can change the developer at no cost.
The second option is to hire Android developers from a freelance platform. Freelance sites have become increasingly popular in recent years because they offer access to inexpensive developers from all over the world. Cost-saving is pretty much the only benefit of hiring from these platforms. Let’s look at the downside.
Freelance Platforms: The disadvantages
- Freelancers have to juggle jobs to ensure a steady income stream. This means that you won’t always get their full attention.
- Risk of poor quality code, which you will then have to pay to fix. Freelance platforms don’t offer compensation for poor work. While you do get to approve milestones, you might not find out about poor code until the testing phase etc., by which time it is too late.
- To hire a freelancer, you will need to shortlist, interview, and vet each one all by yourself. If you plan to build a complete Android development team, then this can take forever. You carry 100% of the risk for this process.
- Freelancers often jump ship when a better job comes up. I don’t need to go into why this is every product owner’s nightmare.
- There have been several famous cases of intellectual property theft that have seen the thief earn billions of dollars while leaving the original product owner with nothing. Why take this risk?
- No development assistance in the form of account managers, product development tools, or unique project management methodologies.
Step 3: Undertake a 3-step interview of all shortlisted candidates
A 3 step interview will give you adequate time to thoroughly review each and every shortlisted candidate. In my experience, the first interview usually gets rid of anywhere between 30% to 70% of candidates. There are a number of reasons why any given candidate might not be suitable. Examples include poor language skills, unsuitable work hour overlap, lack of enthusiasm about the project (usually expressed through unhappiness with the pay offered), etc.
Note: If you are hiring from a software development company, then you will not need to vet that many candidates, as the company will shortlist their most suitable developers for you to interview. As previously stated, hiring from a freelance site means you will be doing all the work.
3-step software developer interview process
Primary screening
The 1st interview is your chance to get to know each of your shortlisted Android developer candidates. In this interview, you will have the chance to learn about each candidate’s personality, work approach, and past experience. Be sure to discuss the pay rate and any rewards, etc., as well as your work terms during this interview.
Note: Do not give away much information about your specific idea and project requirements during this interview as this will help you reduce the risk of intellectual property theft.
Some good questions to ask here include:
- Are they happy using Agile, Waterfall, or something else?
- What task tracker do they use?
- Do they use Slack, Discord, or something else?
- Do they have a GitHub account or can they share their code via your project’s repository?
Technical Assessment
The technical interview is the time when you get to really test your candidate’s abilities. So many developers overstate their experience or skill levels. This is the time to find out who has it and who doesn’t.
You will need to test them on problems that relate to the ones they will be working on in your project. They will need to demonstrate the ability to write clean code, as well as find good solutions to your problems. Added to this, they should demonstrate a good level of competency working with the various development tools and frameworks that you have selected.
Top Tip: If you don’t have in-depth knowledge of Android development and the technologies that you are hiring your Android developer to use, then get someone to help you who does. This is the number one way to understand the exact abilities of your developer. If you don’t know anyone,e then hire someone. You won’t regret it.
I have put together this list of Android interview questions to help get you started. You can use the relevant ones either in this interview or in your job description advert.
3rd Interview
This interview will cover the candidate’s technical skills, problem-solving approach, and how well they really are suited to your project and work environment.
Ideally, you want to get your developer on a Zoom call or another video conferencing app where they can share their screen. This will allow you to see them open their past applications to demonstrate the features that they work on.
In this interview, you should be able to examine their abilities to code specific functionalities like search engine functions, etc., that relate to your project. Don’t waste time looking at non-related features; focus on those that you need them to build.
During this interview, you will also be able to tell your candidates more about your project. This means that you can now ask for specific solutions to the problems that must be solved. This is the section where you will really be able to tell if they have the right skills for your project.
Step 4 – Check references properly
You might be so impressed by an individual developer that you decide not to thoroughly check their references. This is a mistake. You should always do a deep background check to make 100% sure you are getting what you are paying for.
