1. Should I use the MEAN or MERN stack?

MEAN and MERN stacks have much in common, namely, MongoDB, Express JS, and Node JS. The difference is that the MEAN stack uses Angular, whereas the MERN stack uses React. You should choose between the MEAN and MERN stacks based on the following factors:
Project type: You should use the MEAN stack for developing a large enterprise-scale application. On the other hand, you can use the MERN stack for building dynamic websites.
3rd party software integration requirements: You can easily integrate 3rd party APIs with the MEAN stack since Angular makes it easy. However, your team needs to do additional configuration work if you use the MERN stack.
Requirements for implementing a complex website with interactive UI (user interface) elements: You should use the MERN stack. We say this because this technology stack uses React, which updates a virtual Document Object Model (DOM). You will notice that this characteristic allows React to render the UI smoothly. Angular uses the real DOM, therefore, it has more work to do.
Security requirements: You should use the MEAN stack if you have stringent security requirements. Angular provides robust defense against key application security vulnerabilities. Your team must do additional work to implement such protections using React in the MERN stack.

The MEAN stack is reasonably easy to learn. As you can see, Angular, Express JS, and Node JS are all based on JavaScript. A MEAN stack developer then needs to learn only one programming language. That’s easier than a technology stack involving more than 1 language. You need to also remember that JavaScript is designed with simplicity in mind. Therefore, developers don’t have a steep learning curve for Angular, Express JS, and Node JS either. Finally, MongoDB is certainly easier to learn than many other databases.

Well, if you choose the MEAN stack, then you are undertaking full-stack development only. Full stack development refers to the front-end, back-end, and database together. The MEAN stack framework has technologies for each of them. Therefore, the MEAN stack is just one flavor of the full stack. Of course, you can always opt for a full-stack web development without the MEAN stack. To take just one example, you can use JavaScript, HTML, and CSS for front-end development. Your team can use any one of Java, Python, Golang, Ruby on Rails, or PHP for the back-end development. You see, this example of full-stack development isn’t better or worse than the MEAN stack. It’s just that your organizational preferences and project requirements influence your choice of technology stack.

Below, we explain why organizations and developers alike love the MEAN Stack so much. You can now read the benefits of each of the MEAN stack components, namely, MongoDB, Express JS, Angular, and Node JS.

MongoDB

Launched in 2009, MongoDB is an open-source NoSQL database. You might have heard about the rising popularity of MongoDB, and indications are that even more organizations will use it going forward.

So, when should you use this leading document database? MongoDB is a good choice if you have any of these requirements:

  • You are collecting data from diverse sources and integrating it.
  • Your data in question has complex data structures, which don’t fit well with traditional relational database management systems.
  • The transaction volume in your organization is already high, furthermore, you have considerable future scalability requirements.
  • You want to take advantage of cloud computing including hybrid cloud.
  • Your organization uses the Agile development methodology considerably due to the evolving nature of your data.

By using MongoDB, you will join a large number of leading companies like Toyota, Lyft, Accenture, Uber, Expedia, Bosch, Forbes, and more.

Your MEAN stack web application development project will benefit from the following advantages offered by MongoDB:

  • MongoDB stands as a good example of how NoSQL databases can offer cost savings. No, we don’t only mean about it being open-source. You see, the ease of distributing data and the ability to create simple data models makes database maintenance easier. This delivers long-term cost savings to your organization.
  • MongoDB expands horizontally, therefore, it’s highly scalable. You can easily add more computing resources to scale it to meet your requirements.
  • Your team will love the performance-boosting mechanisms of MongoDB including integrated caching.
  • MongoDB doesn’t have requirements for a schema, which makes life easier for your team.
  • You want a user-friendly database, and MongoDB fits the bill well. Features like ad-hoc query capabilities, server-side JavaScript execution, robust indexing, and replication go a long way toward that.

Express JS

Used by giants like Cisco, Lenovo, IBM, Accenture, and Panasonic, Express JS is an open-source web framework based on Node JS. You can use this back-end web development framework to create the following:

  • Single-page web applications;
  • Multi-page web applications;
  • Streaming apps;
  • Fintech applications;
  • Real-time collaboration tools;
  • Hybrid web applications;
  • RESTful APIs.

Released in 2010, Express JS has become very popular. Many organizations as well as experienced web developers even consider it the standard for Node JS-based back-end web development. The following advantages of Express JS tell you why:

  • Developers find Express JS very easy to use. It aids them with rapid application development.
  • Express JS is a lightweight framework. You will find that it’s faster than many other Node JS-based frameworks.
  • Express JS employs an efficient way to handle user requests. You can use it to develop scalable applications. Google V8 Engine supports Express JS, which helps with scaling your app. The non-blocking and event-driven I/O model further helps with scalability.
  • Frameworks providing middleware support make life easier for programmers. Middleware support helps web apps to perform actions like logging, authentication, and error handling easily. Among developers, you will find many ardent fans of Express JS due to this.
  • Developers benefit considerably from the built-in support in Express JS for popular databases like MongoDB and MySQL.
  • You will find that rendering dynamic HTML pages using Express JS is easy. That’s because Express JS supports many template engines.

Angular

An important component of the MEAN stack, Angular, was originally released in 2010 as Angular JS. This open-source, JavaScript-based, front-end web framework has been enhanced significantly since then and is now known as just Angular.

Many organizations and developers use this leading framework to develop different types of web apps, e.g. single-page web apps, dynamic web applications, and business-level web apps. You can gauge the popularity of Angular from the fact that giants like Santander Bank, Microsoft, PayPal, and Forbes use it.

Our developers, just like web developers elsewhere, rate Angular very highly due to its advantages. You get the following benefits by using Angular:

  • Developers can create their own components in Angular. They can then reuse these, furthermore, they can combine them with other components. Programmers can even nest these new components. This flexibility sets Angular apart.
  • Your team can easily integrate 3rd party libraries with Angular. Angular allows you to call data from TypeScript code on a webpage without additional programming.
  • A framework built using components and services, Angular helps you to develop apps faster than many other frameworks.
  • With Angular, your team can easily run both unit testing and end-to-end testing.
  • Since Angular uses TypeScript, you need to write fewer lines of code. You can also write cleaner and more maintainable code using Angular.
  • The soaring popularity of Angular means that you get considerable community support.

Node JS

A well-known open-source JavaScript runtime environment, Node JS was released in 2009. It enjoys great popularity.

You can use Node JS for the following purposes:

  • Node JS is good for developing the back-end of web applications.
  • Your programmers can develop APIs using Node JS.
  • Writing fast and scalable server-side scripts is another use case of Node JS.
  • Developers can create dynamic pages with it.
  • You can use Node JS to create complex single-page applications.
  • Node JS lends itself well to CLI (command line interfaces) development.
  • Programmers developing streaming apps can use Node JS.
  • If you choose to use Node JS, then you are in the league of elite organizations like NASA, Trello, Netflix, LinkedIn, Walmart, Uber, eBay, and GoDaddy!

What benefits can you expect if you use Node JS? These are as follows:
Node JS offers high performance due to its event-linked nature, non-blockable operations, and architecture.

Due to characteristics like cluster modules, efficient load balancing, and a non-blocking event loop mechanism, Node JS offers excellent scalability.
You can find Node JS developers relatively easily since many developers already know JavaScript.

Given that JavaScript itself is easy to learn, your software developers can learn Node JS quickly.
Node JS supports code reusability, a key software development best practice.
There’s a large ecosystem of open-source tools for Node JS, which enables developers to gain productivity.

You likely want quick software development so that you can meet stringent business deadlines. Node JS is easy to use, which accelerates coding.
Your team gets excellent community support from the energetic and large community of Node JS developers.
